BT switch off PSTN (ISDN) will be finalised by 2025. In this blog we will explain what it is, how this will effect your business, and what options you have moving forward.
What BT are saying:
“We’re moving all our customers from the old analogue public switched telephone network (PSTN) to a fully digital network. We’ve already started. We plan to have moved everyone over before Openreach stop the PSTN (and ISDN) service in 2025. By then, every phone line in the UK will be digital, routing calls over IP (Internet Protocol) rather than the traditional PSTN.” – BT
Why are BT doing this?
According to BT, the whole of the UK has functioned on PSTN for decades. However, with the technological advancements, such as smartphones’ capabilities, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Social Media apps etc. This meant that the UK needs to also upgrade its system for telecommunication network. Since ISDN circuits are physically installed, upgrading to the new system would mean that there would be no need for a physical building, thus making it easier to set up, and cost effective.
Don’t panic! the alternative is something we have been already using, such as WhatsApp! As mentioned above, this is the Internal Protocol phone system (mostly referred to as IP). The two most popular IP systems are:
1- SIP – This stands for Session Initiation Protocol. With SIP you can use multiple forms of media, such as video calling, have regular calls using the internet, instant messaging and so on.
2- VoIP – This stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is different to SIP, as VoIP only allows you to send and receive audio-based calls, reaching landlines or cell phones that is via a broadband internet connection.
How will this affect my business?
There are many benefits to BT’s switch for your business. More specifically, to changing from a traditional landline to using VoIP. Here are some of the benefits:
– Being able to make and receive calls from anywhere using any device with the same number
– You are able to connect with your colleagues, customers or any stakeholders you may have using various applications that allow video chat, calls and collaboration. KSM utilises Microsoft Teams and Webex for a stable and clear method of collaboration.
– When using the cloud, everything will be accessible at any-time no matter the location, but providing that there is a stable internet connection.
– Cheaper than PSTN and ISDN as your calls would be routed via the internet
Since 2020, you cannot obtain PSTN and ISDN from BT. Therefore, as off now you will have to switch to SIP and VoIP solutions, or seek for a provider elsewhere by 2025
