Switching to remote work – What you should know
Working from home has increased since Covid-19’s impact. Lockdowns have forced businesses of all industry sectors across the world to adapt to a new style of work. Is yours one of them? Then keep reading to find out more.
“Eighty-four percent of employers are set to rapidly digitalize working processes, including a significant expansion of remote work—with the potential to move 44% of their workforce to operate remotely by 2025.”
A 2020 report from – https://www.weforum.org/reports/the-future-of-jobs-report-2020/digest
So, what are the benefits of remote work?
1- Boosted productivity – According to a recent study based on 30,000 workers in the United States, working just one day per week can help boost productivity by 4.8%. This is due to people saving time from not commuting to work and back.
2- Improved work diversity – Those that would not work or could not commute to work, still had an opportunity. For instance, it allows flexibility for those living far/ outside the city, mothers, or older employees that do not wish to retire yet. This also helps the UK confront an ageing population.
3- Saved costs for all – Remote work saves travel expenses for employees, and reduces business running costs from not having to purchase office equipment or offices rent.

Any drawbacks?
According to Baudot and Lisa et al, despite the many benefits remote work has brought to employees and business owners, the benefits were still dependant on a few factors.
For instance:
1- Demographic variables – such as childcare access during remote work
2- Job-related variables – Jobs of a business professional nature, position level, job tenure
3- Distractions at home – It can sometimes be difficult to fully focus at home, and time between personal/ family and work may be difficult to separate.
Tips to improve working from home
Here are 3 easy tips you might want to implement to boosting your remote work experience:
1- Set a day structure like you would at work.
This should help you separate your personal life from your work life, thus making it less stressful to organise your time. Equally, you would not feel stressed at the end of the day thinking you still need to finish off a task, or check your e-mails.
2- Find a dedicated space for work.
Finding a place that is comfortable can help you focus. If that is difficult to do from home, then check out your local libraries or cafés with WIFI, which you can go to regularly.
3- Make sure to keep a healthy diet.
What you eat impacts not only on your health, but also on your concentration and how you feel. To be more productive and to avoid lunch time carb-crashes, it is best to stray from processed foods and snacks, such as biscuits, and pizza, and opt for more healthier options. This could be fish, beans and lentils, whole grains, berries, nuts and salads. It is also important to keep hydrated to avoid headaches and loss of focus.
